Ten hours<br \/>\nof steady rain had driven him<br \/>\nto crawl beneath a sack of rice.<\/p>\n<p>Parting with his poison &#8211; flash<br \/>\nof diabolic tail in the dark room &#8211;<br \/>\nhe risked the rain again.<\/p>\n<p>The peasants came like swarms of flies<br \/>\nand buzzed the name of God a hundred times<br \/>\nto paralyse the Evil One.<\/p>\n<p>With candles and with lanterns<br \/>\nthrowing giant scorpion shadows<br \/>\non the mud-baked walls<br \/>\nthey searched for him: he was not found.<br \/>\nThey clicked their tongues.<br \/>\nWith every movement that the scorpion made his poison moved in Mother&#8217;s blood, they said.<\/p>\n<p>May he sit still, they said<br \/>\nMay the sins of your previous birth<br \/>\nbe burned away tonight, they said.<br \/>\nMay your suffering decrease<br \/>\nthe misfortunes of your next birth, they said.<br \/>\nMay the sum of all evil<br \/>\nbalanced in this unreal world<\/p>\n<p>against the sum of good<br \/>\nbecome diminished by your pain.<br \/>\nMay the poison purify your flesh<\/p>\n<p>of desire, and your spirit of ambition,<br \/>\nthey said, and they sat around<br \/>\non the floor with my mother in the centre,<br \/>\nthe peace of understanding on each face.<br \/>\nMore candles, more lanterns, more neighbours,<br \/>\nmore insects, and the endless rain.<br \/>\nMy mother twisted through and through,<br \/>\ngroaning on a mat.<br \/>\nMy father, sceptic, rationalist,<br \/>\ntrying every curse and blessing,<br \/>\npowder, mixture, herb and hybrid.<br \/>\nHe even poured a little paraffin<br \/>\nupon the bitten toe and put a match to it.<br \/>\nI watched the flame feeding on my mother.<br \/>\nI watched the holy man perform his rites to tame the poison with an incantation.<br \/>\nAfter twenty hours<br \/>\nit lost its sting.<\/p>\n<p>My mother only said<br \/>\nThank God the scorpion picked on me<br \/>\nAnd spared my children.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;14064&#8243; img_size=&#8221;full&#8221;][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][vc_text_separator title=&#8221;&#8221; color=&#8221;juicy_pink&#8221; style=&#8221;dotted&#8221; border_width=&#8221;3&#8243;]<div class=\"ult-spacer spacer-69d6ca0a5bc2f\" data-id=\"69d6ca0a5bc2f\" data-height=\"50\" data-height-mobile=\"50\" data-height-tab=\"50\" data-height-tab-portrait=\"\" data-height-mobile-landscape=\"\" style=\"clear:both;display:block;\"><\/div>[\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_custom_heading text=&#8221;5. She eyed the dusty floor<br \/>\nboldly, and put a broom before<br \/>\nme, and said she&#8217;d like to be able<br \/>\nto eat her dinner off that table,<br \/>\nand nodded at my feet, then left.<br \/>\nI knew right off what she expected<br \/>\nand went at it.
