ELZ Talk 01 – “Post-colonial Politics of Language and Social Space”

The first session of the ELZ Talk series was successfully held on 11 August 2025 at the
English Learning Zone (ELZ) balcony area, from 5.00 PM to 6.30 PM. The event featured a
thought-provoking talk by Prof. Nihal Perera from the Ball State University, USA, on the
theme, “Post-colonial politics of language and social space.” The event was a joint venture by
the Library and the English Language Association (ELA) of the Faculty of Humanities and
Social Sciences.

The Dean of the Faculty of Management Studies and Commerce attended the event,
the Librarian, Dr. Madhubashini Ratnayake, academic staff from the Library and Department
of English Language Teaching, students, and a few guests from outside the university who
shared a deep interest in the topic. After the talk, the group was given a tour of the English
Learning Zone by the Librarian and Dr. Madhubashini Ratnayake.

It was an evening that combined intellectual engagement with friendly conversations, and a
relaxed atmosphere. It marked a perfect start to the ELZ Talk series.
